KAINUK; WHERE THE EARTH BLEED...
In the past few weeks, the media has been awash with disheartening, disgusting and bamboozling news about insecurity and banditry along the Southern corridor especially the beautiful Kainuk town (K-town). In all of these news, Kainuk has been on the spotlight as the most insecure place arguably in Kenya. In this place, the earth bleed blood of people killed by Pokot bandits.
However, this was evidenced by day to day Highway killings of innocent travellers vis-a-vis cattle rustling. If we we're to be historically factual, Pokot bandits raiding this area of Turkana County have killed innocent people who are cumulatively more than what any genocide has taken to the grave in the world.
Nevertheless, Kainuk is a name derived from the house of a mother (INOK). The name was called KAI-AINOK. Which the white man is his accent named KAINUK. This KAI-AINOK was situated in the current LAMI NYEUPE (Formerly LAMI NYEUSI). Infact, it is somewhere after LAMI NYEUPE on your way to Kitale.
The current LAMI NYEUPE was started in 2019 in the mid of peaceful moment between Turkana and Pokots that lasted for about 4 Years from 2018 - 2021. The current KAINUK is originally called NAKULULUMAET which simply mean Where people swim. This was the place where the peasant lived and swam especially during harvest seasons because farmers in Turkana are traditionally considered Peasants because we're nomads.
Sadly, barely two days ago at around 1pm,a medical officer in KAINUK HEALTH CENTRE was shot by Pokot bandits. The injury is severe. This was followed by an evening attack at around 8:00Pm. On the same day, a police post was erected at LAMI NYEUSI. This is done by the government despite the fact that LAMI NYEUSI is a disputed land which is wholly in Turkana County.
Conversely, I fail to understand if the government has failed in ensuring that security is realized in this region. Can the government achieve this without neutrality? Are the bandits unstoppable? Who is behind this banditry economy? Can local solutions erase banditry forever? Or can those local solutions still create severe local problems?
As I speak, the people of Kainuk can't access basic healthcare because the officers in charge of the facility are afraid of being terminated by the Pokots. Our mothers can neither go to collect firewood as a source of their daily bread nor go to their farms. There's no any NGO aid that has responded to their rescue. The county Government too has taken time to come to their rescue. Should we burry our mothers when they're still alive? How can people be imprisoned in their own land? Is this what the leadership promised to fight against? Starving could wipe Kainuk people before even Pokots bandits could come for them.
You'll hear leadership speaking about peace and I strongly say I DON'T WANT PEACE. All I want is JUSTICE. To sit in my rightful place peacefully. To farm peacefully in my farm. To graze in my ancestoral grass peacefully.
If peace means keeping my mouth shut in the face of evil and injustice, I don't want it. If peace means willingness to be exploited economically, dominated politically, humiliated and segregated, I don't want it. If peace means giving our grass and land in exchange for our lives, I don't want it. KILL US ALL!!!
We're all aware that justice delayed is justice denied. All we're asking is JUSTICE and EQUITY. Our survival in this part of Kenya is a life-threatening experience. LISTEN TO US!!!
I humbly ask the National Government, The Turkana County government, The NGOs and Well-wishers to review lives in KAINUK by offering food items to sustain lives before the GoK could calm down this unending banditry.
