An Enemy from Within

Once, deep in a thriving forest, the trees gathered for a grand election to choose their leader. The contest drew candidates from all corners of the forest, each with promises of growth, security, and unity. Among them stood an axe, gleaming and confident. Its wooden handle convinced the trees it was one of them, a product of their own roots and kinship. The trees, captivated by the axe's charm and promises, voted it into leadership unanimously, believing they had entrusted their future to one of their own. But the days that followed were marked by tragedy. The forest’s harmony began to unravel as trees fell one by one, their trunks severed by a sharp, merciless blade. Bewildered and betrayed, the trees realized the cruel irony: the axe, whose wooden handle had convinced them of its allegiance, wielded a blade that worked against them. Their trust had armed their own destruction. This fable mirrors the reality in Turkana County, a region blessed with resilient people but crippl...

Politics of Poverty and Poverty of Politics

In Animal Farm , George Orwell vividly exposes the tragic betrayal that unfolds when leaders who once championed equality become the very tyrants they vowed to overthrow. As the pigs rise to power, they ruthlessly exploit their fellow animals, hoarding resources and distorting truth to solidify their own wealth and privilege. Orwell’s allegory is a powerful indictment of how easily ideals of justice and equality can be manipulated by those in power to serve selfish ends, leaving communities oppressed, impoverished, and stripped of dignity. Through the animals’ plight, Orwell calls for vigilance against leaders who would exploit trust for personal gain. However, in the barren yet resilient lands of Turkana, a region marked by a historical legacy of marginalization and developmental neglect, the struggles of the local people echo across its harsh, sun-scorched plains. For decades, Turkana has been the symbol of poverty, suffering, and hardship—a place on the periphery of national attent...

Sleeping on fortune: How Non-locals Exploit Turkana’s Wealth

Image
Quite an illustrative art (Source: Image creator) My daily encounters in major towns in Turkana have always left me perplexed but with one unapologetic fact; that Turkana economy is at the hands of non-locals who identified the gaps years ago and came in to invest in Turkana. However, while moving from the dusty streets of Lodwar to the bustling trading hubs of Kakuma, I am occasionally struck by the thick contrast between the immense potential of the land and the stunted growth of its people. Turkana is vast, rich in resources, and strategically located, yet its people seem disconnected from the wealth that surrounds them. In these towns, economic activity thrives, but the people driving this success are mostly non-locals —individuals who came to Turkana, identified gaps, and built businesses. Meanwhile, the locals, the rightful stewards of this land, rema...

Echoes of Betrayal: The Turkana Elite's Hollow Legacy

Image
Quite a demonstrative piece of visual art. In the sprawling plains of Turkana, beneath the blistering sun that casts an unforgiving glare upon the parched earth, lies a complex web of power and privilege woven intricately by the hands of the Turkana elite. Their story is one of paradox, a tale where privilege marries neglect, and aspiration entwines with abandonment. Irony drips from their legacy like water from a cracked vessel, revealing how those who should be the champions of progress have instead become the architects of stagnation.   The Turkana elite, often cloaked in tailored suits, classy cars and polished shoes, parade around with the veneer of prosperity. They sit in their lavish homes, sipping tea brewed from the finest leaves, while the vast majority of their people wrestle daily with the specter of hunger, thirst, and inadequate healthcare. As economist Thomas Piketty argues in Capital in the Twenty-First Century, “The past devours the future” when wealth is con...

A Legacy of Strength and Compassion: Honoring the Unforgettable George Otieno Ila

Image
A photo of the Late George Otieno Ila(Source: Facebook) In the quiet moments following the passing of George Otieno Ila, we are left with an overwhelming sense of loss that words can scarcely describe. This man was not just a leader, not merely an administrator, but a force of nature, a beacon of hope, and a father to those who had the privilege of walking the corridors of Lodwar High School under his watchful eye. He was a mentor, a protector, a dreamer who dared to believe that every child, no matter how marginalized or overlooked, deserved the chance to rise. George Otieno Ila was, in every sense of the word, exceptional. His passion for education was unmatched, his dedication to his students boundless. Like Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart, he despised weakness — not because he lacked compassion, but because he saw potential. He believed that weakness was something to be conquered, not indulged. He would not to...

Turkana Development Trust (TDT): A Perfect Masterpiece for Turkana Deliverance

Image
Logo of Turkana Development Trust(Source: Turkana Development Trust Website) In their book "Governance and Accountability in Africa: The Role of Development Trusts," Michael Bratton and Nicolas van de Walle argue that development trusts promote transparency and accountability by involving local communities in decision-making processes. By ensuring that governance structures are inclusive and responsive to community needs, trusts enhance trust in institutions and prioritize sustainable development initiatives that are tailored to the socio-economic and cultural contexts of African communities, thus fostering long-term development outcomes. Turkana County, situated in northern Kenya, has endured decades of marginalization and neglect under successive political regimes prior to the advent of the 2010 Kenyan Constitution, which introduced the revolutionary concept of devolution. This constitutional change was intended to decentralize power and resources, bringing governance and...

USAID Nawiri: Catalyzing Change in Turkana and Northern Kenya.

Image
A Turkana local woman(Naroo Nachwae, 23 years) from Kaikor doing Electrical wiring(Source: USAID Nawiri Facebook page)   "Dead Aid" by Dambisa Moyo challenges the effectiveness of traditional aid models, arguing for a shift towards sustainable solutions. USAID Nawiri exemplifies this shift by focusing on holistic approaches to address root causes of poverty and vulnerability in regions like Turkana and Northern Kenya. Through community engagement, capacity-building, and long-term investments in resilience-building initiatives, USAID Nawiri demonstrates a departure from conventional aid practices towards more impactful and sustainable interventions. By embodying principles of effectiveness and empowerment advocated in "Dead Aid," USAID Nawiri serves as a classical example of how donor organizations can catalyze meaningful change in marginalized communities. Turkana and Northern Kenya have long been grappling with diverse challenges, ranging from persistent droughts...

BLOOD BALLOT: "The Vicious Cycle Stalling Northern Kenya's Progress"

In "Wars, Guns, and Votes: Democracy in Dangerous Places," Paul Collier explores how electoral democracy often fails in the world's poorest countries, exacerbating violence and hindering development. Collier argues that in nations lacking the essential infrastructure for true democracy—such as the rule of law and transparent electoral processes—elections can be manipulated by violent and corrupt means. This creates a cycle where political leaders gain power through promises of aggression and sectarian violence, rather than through policies that foster development and peace. This phenomenon is particularly evident in Northern Kenya, where candidates who vow to attack neighboring communities gain electoral support, leading to persistent instability and underdevelopment. In the sprawling, rugged landscapes of Northern Kenya, a region marked by breathtaking natural beauty and stark socioeconomic challenges, a troubling paradox unfolds with each election cycle. Here, wher...
