Sleeping on fortune: How Non-locals Exploit Turkana’s Wealth

Quite an illustrative art (Source: Image creator) My daily encounters in major towns in Turkana have always left me perplexed but with one unapologetic fact; that Turkana economy is at the hands of non-locals who identified the gaps years ago and came in to invest in Turkana. However, while moving from the dusty streets of Lodwar to the bustling trading hubs of Kakuma, I am occasionally struck by the thick contrast between the immense potential of the land and the stunted growth of its people. Turkana is vast, rich in resources, and strategically located, yet its people seem disconnected from the wealth that surrounds them. In these towns, economic activity thrives, but the people driving this success are mostly non-locals —individuals who came to Turkana, identified gaps, and built businesses. Meanwhile, the locals, the rightful stewards of this land, rema...

Echoes of Betrayal: The Turkana Elite's Hollow Legacy

Image
Quite a demonstrative piece of visual art. In the sprawling plains of Turkana, beneath the blistering sun that casts an unforgiving glare upon the parched earth, lies a complex web of power and privilege woven intricately by the hands of the Turkana elite. Their story is one of paradox, a tale where privilege marries neglect, and aspiration entwines with abandonment. Irony drips from their legacy like water from a cracked vessel, revealing how those who should be the champions of progress have instead become the architects of stagnation.   The Turkana elite, often cloaked in tailored suits, classy cars and polished shoes, parade around with the veneer of prosperity. They sit in their lavish homes, sipping tea brewed from the finest leaves, while the vast majority of their people wrestle daily with the specter of hunger, thirst, and inadequate healthcare. As economist Thomas Piketty argues in Capital in the Twenty-First Century, “The past devours the future” when wealth is con...

A Legacy of Strength and Compassion: Honoring the Unforgettable George Otieno Ila

Image
A photo of the Late George Otieno Ila(Source: Facebook) In the quiet moments following the passing of George Otieno Ila, we are left with an overwhelming sense of loss that words can scarcely describe. This man was not just a leader, not merely an administrator, but a force of nature, a beacon of hope, and a father to those who had the privilege of walking the corridors of Lodwar High School under his watchful eye. He was a mentor, a protector, a dreamer who dared to believe that every child, no matter how marginalized or overlooked, deserved the chance to rise. George Otieno Ila was, in every sense of the word, exceptional. His passion for education was unmatched, his dedication to his students boundless. Like Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart, he despised weakness — not because he lacked compassion, but because he saw potential. He believed that weakness was something to be conquered, not indulged. He would not to...
